Driving Test Wait Times Drop to 16 Weeks as RSA Accelerates Progress

Learner drivers across Cork and Ireland are getting closer to their test dates as the Road Safety Authority reports significant improvements in reducing waiting times, with the national average now at 16.3 weeks.

The RSA’s latest update shows strong progress towards its ambitious target of cutting waiting times to just 10 weeks by September 2025, offering hope to the thousands of learners who have been patiently waiting for their chance to get behind the wheel independently.

Brendan Walsh, Chief Operations Officer of the RSA, said:

“The significant reduction in waiting times so far demonstrates our commitment to delivering a more efficient, accessible testing system for all learner drivers. We know how important this milestone is, and we are determined to continue this momentum through the summer and into autumn.”

The improvement comes as part of the RSA’s comprehensive Driving Test Action Plan, which has implemented targeted measures to increase capacity and improve efficiency across the national testing system.

However, the RSA is keen to emphasise that shorter waiting times should not mean less preparation. Current national pass rates tell a concerning story: with only 53% of learners passing their test in 2025, almost half must reapply and wait again.

Walsh added:

“So far in 2025, the national pass rate stands at 53%, meaning that almost half of learner drivers must reapply to sit their test again. While we know learners have waited patiently for a test, it is crucial to see the test as a critical step towards becoming a safe, confident, and independent driver.”

The RSA has identified the most common reasons for test failures, which include inadequate observation when moving off and at junctions, failure to anticipate other drivers’ actions, incorrect road positioning, and inadequate progress at junctions and roundabouts.

Learners are encouraged to practice regularly with their sponsor, building confidence across various road and traffic conditions. Before attending their test, drivers must ensure their vehicle meets all requirements including roadworthiness, tax, insurance, and NCT compliance.

The continued improvement in waiting times will be welcome news for Cork’s learner drivers, particularly those who have been navigating the city’s busy roads and preparing for tests at local centres.
