Heritage Sites Across Ireland Open Free on 16 August

More than 70 heritage sites across Ireland will welcome visitors without charge on Saturday 16 August, as the Office of Public Works marks the opening day of National Heritage Week 2025.

The annual initiative offers families and heritage enthusiasts the chance to explore Ireland’s historic treasures, from medieval castles to ancient abbeys, under this year’s theme “Exploring Our Foundations”. The week-long celebration continues through 24 August, encouraging people to discover the cultural landscapes and historic structures that have shaped the nation.

Cork’s own Barryscourt Castle features prominently in this year’s offerings, having reopened in April following extensive conservation work. The medieval stronghold now provides visitors with an enhanced experience at one of Ireland’s most atmospheric historic sites.

The announcement was made at Portumna Castle in County Galway, a 17th-century semi-fortified manor house that perfectly embodies this year’s theme. Located on the northern shores of Lough Derg, the castle demonstrates how Irish architecture has evolved whilst influencing local traditions and landscapes.

Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, Minister of State for the Office of Public Works:

“We are delighted to offer free admission on the opening day of Heritage Week, on Saturday 16 August. With over 70 heritage sites on offer, there is something for everyone to explore and enjoy. By offering the free day admission, it allows greater numbers to avail of the events.”

Martina Moloney, Chair of the Heritage Council:

“The OPW cares for some of the most magnificent places in Ireland: places of extraordinary beauty and history that inspire a deep connection to our shared past. I would encourage everyone to seize this opportunity to explore an OPW site, whether it’s a towering medieval castle, a peaceful walled garden, or a historic house that tells the story of generations.”

Special events during Heritage Week include family activities at Glendalough with tours and Lego workshops, guided tours at Ross Castle in Kerry exploring its transformation from Gaelic stronghold to English barracks, and living history demonstrations at the Battle of the Boyne site featuring 17th-century soldiers.

Creative activities await at Sligo Abbey with “Art in the Abbey” charcoal drawing sessions suitable for all ages, whilst Old Mellifont Abbey offers medieval tile painting workshops. The JFK Arboretum will host Dinosaur Tree Tours for younger visitors.

The free admission covers all fee-paying heritage sites except Kilmainham Gaol and Brú na Boinne. Complete event details are available at heritageireland.ie and heritageweek.ie.
