An Garda Síochána has begun writing to nearly 1,000 motorists to cancel speeding fines and penalty points issued on the N25 in Kilkenny following a human error in the camera processing system. All fixed charge notices issued between 30th May and 30th June 2025 are being revoked, with automatic refunds and point removals underway.
The error affected 914 speeding fixed charge notices detected by the static speed safety camera on the N25 in Kilkenny over the one-month period. Of these notices, 128 had been paid with penalty points already applied, whilst 56 were paid before the error was identified and points applied. The remaining 730 notices were unpaid when the mistake was discovered.
The problem came to light following a query on 30th June 2025, when An Garda Síochána confirmed an error with the offence location details on the fixed charge notices. The mistake occurred during data input when processing the camera detections onto the system.
The error was rectified immediately upon discovery on 30th June, and the static safety camera resumed valid operations from 4th July 2025. An Garda Síochána has confirmed that only the N25 static camera was affected by this processing error.
Chief Superintendent Roads Policing, David Harrington:
“An Garda Síochána is very conscious of our statutory responsibility for road safety and is committed to delivering a professional policing service to enforcement of speeding via a variety of speed safety cameras. This error is very much regretted. An Garda Síochána continues to work steadfastly with all our partners in Road Safety endeavouring to reduce the human toll of road deaths and serious injuries on our roads.”
An Garda Síochána has taken full responsibility for the error and completed a comprehensive review of all offence locations associated with both static and average safety cameras across the network. Additional oversight measures have been introduced to verify offence locations before any new cameras become operational.
The force has informed the Departments of Justice and Transport, the Policing & Community Safety Authority, the Road Safety Authority, and the Safety Camera Board of the matter.
Affected motorists do not need to take any action, as they will receive a letter in the post confirming the cancellation. Refunds will be issued automatically and penalty points removed where necessary. No summons were issued for non-payment of these fines within the prescribed timeframe.
