Residents of Macroom and surrounding areas will face night-time water restrictions from 8 pm tonight (Thursday) until 7 am tomorrow morning (Friday) due to an unexpected mechanical issue at the Macroom Water Treatment Plant.
The sudden malfunction, which has necessitated the plant’s shutdown, requires urgent repairs to allow reservoir levels to recover overnight and ensure a consistent supply of drinking water during the day.
Areas affected by this restriction include Macroom town, Codrum, Masseytown, Kilnagurteen, Coolehane, Coolcower, Macloneigh, Carrigadrohid, and nearby localities. During the restriction period, customers in these areas might experience low pressure or interruptions to their water supply.
Uisce Éireann, in collaboration with Cork County Council, is actively working to complete the essential repairs as quickly and safely as possible.
Speaking on the issue, Operations Lead with Uisce Éireann, Niall O’Riordan, emphasized the team’s efforts to minimize disruption:
“The repairs are being conducted as quickly as possible to restore water for all customers. We understand the inconvenience restrictions can cause, and we appreciate customers’ patience as we work to carry out repairs,” he stated.
O’Riordan further urged residents to play their part in ensuring water conservation during this period. Simple measures, such as turning off hoses, avoiding power washing, and checking for leaks on outdoor taps, can make a significant difference.
Uisce Éireann’s conservation calculator, available on www.water.ie/calculator, provides assistance in calculating water savings and offers guidance on how to conserve even more water.
The public is also encouraged to report any visible leaks on the public network via the Uisce Éireann website at www.water.ie or by contacting the 24/7 customer care helpline at 1800 278 278.
Vulnerable customers registered with Uisce Éireann will receive direct communication from the utility regarding planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours. As per standard practice, most homes and businesses should have on-site water storage to provide a backup source of water for sanitation purposes.
Updates on the situation will be available in the Water Supply Updates section of the Uisce Éireann website. The situation is set to be reviewed again tomorrow, and any further decisions will be communicated to the public.
Residents are urged to follow the water restrictions and remain patient as Uisce Éireann works diligently to rectify the situation and ensure the continued supply of clean drinking water.
