Barnardos, the children’s charity that has been a pillar of support for disadvantaged communities in Ireland for over 60 years, is urging the public to donate generously today, Friday 22nd September, to mark Barnardos Giving Day. The initiative is kindly supported by Dell Technologies.
Rising Demand for Services Amid Economic Strain
In 2022, Barnardos worked with 20,838 children and their families, marking an increase of almost 24% compared to the previous year. The charity’s staff have reported an alarming rise in families struggling to cope with the escalating cost of living, often unable to afford basic essentials like heating, electricity, and food.
Addressing Childhood Trauma
Barnardos provides crucial support to children affected by a range of traumas, including poverty, domestic violence, child abuse or neglect, parental mental health issues, separation, bereavement, and parental addiction. The charity operates in 54 service locations, including family homes, schools, early learning and care settings, and communities.
How Donations Make a Difference
- A donation of €10 can provide a child with a nutritious breakfast for a week at a Barnardos Breakfast Club.
- €30 can help children and families access essential toiletries to stay clean and healthy.
- €100 can offer 10 hours of learning support to a child, aiding their reading, writing, and communication skills as they start school.
Voices of Support
Mary Gamble, Barnardos Director of Fundraising, emphasised the urgency of the situation: “The rising cost of living is putting more children at risk of deprivation and negatively affecting their health, wellbeing, and development. Public support on our Giving Day ensures we can continue to help vulnerable children reach their full potential.”
Bob Savage, Vice President Regional CIO for EMEA and Cork site leader at Dell Technologies, lauded the charity’s impact: “Since first collaborating in 2017, we have been amazed by Barnardos’ transformative effect on children and families. We are proud to support Barnardos Giving Day and help extend the charity’s reach.”
Media Partnership
To amplify the message, Barnardos has partnered with Ireland’s Classic Hits Radio, aiming to raise awareness and garner support for the charity’s vital work.
