Cork City Council Activates Severe Weather Plan as Storm Éowyn Approaches


Cork City Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team convened this afternoon in response to the severe weather warnings issued by Met Éireann for Storm Éowyn, which is expected to impact Cork over the coming days.

The following warnings have been issued for Cork:

  • Status Yellow Rain Warning: In effect from 9:00 PM Thursday, 23 January 2025, to 3:00 AM Friday, 24 January 2025.
  • Status Orange Wind Warning: In effect from 2:00 AM to 5:00 PM Friday, 24 January 2025.
  • Status Red Wind Warning: In effect from 2:00 AM to 10:00 AM Friday, 24 January 2025.

In preparation for the storm, the council has activated its Severe Weather Plan. Residents are urged to heed the following safety advice during the storm:

  • Avoid going outside during the Red Warning period.
  • Refrain from making unnecessary journeys during the Orange Warning. If travel is essential, exercise caution due to hazardous conditions and potential debris on roads.
  • Be mindful of potential structural damage to buildings.
  • Stay clear of exposed quays, coastlines, rivers, and lakes.
  • Avoid any fallen electricity lines or trees.
  • Charge mobile devices and have a functioning torch readily available.
  • Secure loose outdoor items, such as trampolines, parasols, and temporary structures.
  • Ensure construction sites, including equipment and fencing, are properly secured.

No river or tidal flooding is anticipated in Cork City during the storm.

  • Public parks will remain closed until safety inspections are conducted on Friday morning, reopening after 12:00 noon, with Mahon Golf Course closed until Saturday morning.
  • Public car parks will reopen after 12:00 noon on Friday.
