Cork City Council asks road users exercise caution ahead of yellow rain warning issued for Cork

Associated with Storm Ciarán clipping the south coast of Ireland over night, Met Eireann have issued a yellow rain warning for Cork City commencing at 7:00pm tonight(Wednesday) and ending at 7:00am tomorrow (Thursday) morning.

While Cork City Council is not predicting widespread river or rain flooding across the City, nor are we predicting tidal flooding in the city centre, this further rainfall associated with Storm Ciarán, combined with existing saturated ground conditions, may lead to some localised spot flooding across Cork later this evening and tonight.

There will be heavy rain and possibly strong winds overnight leading to hazardous driving conditions and so Cork City Council would ask motorists to slow down and to drive with extra care.

Strong winds can make driving conditions hazardous, especially for the more vulnerable road users, e.g., cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and high sided vehicles. Road users should pay particular attention to the risk posed by damaged trees and fallen debris as trees are in full leaf and thus susceptible to wind damage.

There may also be localised spot flooding on roads and so extra vigilance is required when driving this evening and later tonight.

Never ever drive through flooded roads, the depth of the water can be deceiving and you may get stuck, requiring rescue by the Emergency Services while also potentially doing serious damage to your vehicle.
