Cork City Council Issues Severe Weather Warning Ahead of Storm Éowyn


Cork City Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team convened this afternoon to address the severe weather warnings associated with Storm Éowyn, issued by Met Éireann. A series of weather alerts, ranging from Status Yellow to Status Red, have been announced for Cork in the coming days, prompting the activation of the council’s Severe Weather Plan.

Weather Warnings for Cork:

  • Status Yellow Rain Warning: Effective from 21:00 Thursday, 23rd January 2025, to 05:00 Friday, 24th January 2025.
  • Status Orange Wind Warning: In place from 00:00 to 16:00 on Friday, 24th January 2025.
  • Status Red Wind Warning: The most severe warning, active from 02:00 to 10:00 on Friday morning.

In response, Cork City Council has urged the public to take safety precautions and adhere to the following advice:

  • Avoid going outside during the Status Red Warning.
  • Refrain from unnecessary journeys during the Status Orange Warning. If travel is essential, proceed with caution as debris and hazardous conditions are expected.
  • Stay clear of exposed quays, coasts, rivers, lakes, and any fallen electricity lines or trees.
  • Charge mobile devices and keep a working torch accessible.
  • Secure loose outdoor items such as trampolines and temporary structures.
  • Construction sites should ensure plant, materials, and fencing are secured.

Key Updates and Services:

  • Flooding: No river or tidal flooding is anticipated in Cork City during the storm.
  • Customer Service Support: The City Council’s out-of-hours service will be operational from 02:00 to 07:00 on Friday at 021-4966512, with normal services available from 07:00 to 18:00 at 021-4924000. Emergency services can be reached at 112 or 999.
  • Public Facilities:
    • Public counters in Cork City Hall will open after 12:00 on Friday.
    • Public parks will remain closed until a safety review is completed on Friday morning, reopening after 12:00. Mahon Golf Course will stay closed until Saturday morning.
    • Public car parks will reopen after 12:00 on Friday.
  • Accommodation Support: Cork City Council is collaborating with organisations like Cork Simon Outreach and Good Shepherd Services to ensure rough sleepers are provided shelter during the storm. Additional beds will be available to facilitate everyone in need.
