Cork City Council has issued a warning regarding a period of naturally occurring, very high astronomical Spring Tides that will continue from this evening (Tuesday) until the weekend. The warning is further heightened by a forecast from Met Éireann, which advises that a combination of strong winds and high waves associated with an Atlantic storm front could lead to a significant storm surge. This combination of events is expected to result in localised tidal flooding in low-lying areas of Cork City over the coming days.
While no property damage or road closures are anticipated at this time, the Council advises that ponding and minor flooding may occur on the usual low-lying quays. These areas are especially at risk during the evening high tides on Wednesday and Thursday.
The predicted high tide times are as follows:
- Tuesday (Today), 20/08/2024: 19:02 hrs
- Wednesday, 21/08/2024: 07:23 hrs and 19:45 hrs
- Thursday, 22/08/2024: 08:05 hrs and 20:27 hrs
- Friday, 23/08/2024: 08:48 hrs and 21:11 hrs
The specific areas that are likely to be affected by tidal flooding include:
- Morrison’s Quay
- Fr. Mathew Quay
- Fr. Mathew Street
- Union Quay
- Trinity Bridge
- South Terrace
- Rutland Street
- Sawmill Street
- Crosses Green
- Sharman Crawford St
- Wandesford Quay
- South Mall (particularly the southern side)
Cork City Council will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates if necessary. Regular updates will be posted on the Council’s Twitter account (@corkcitycouncil) and via the City Council’s Public Alert System (MapAlerter).
