Cork Communities Celebrate Bonfire Night with Environment-Friendly ‘Non-Fire Night’ Events

Six Cork neighbourhoods will mark St John’s Night on Monday 23rd June with family-friendly celebrations that swap traditional bonfires for safer, greener alternatives.

Cork City Council is supporting local summer fun days in Knocknaheeny, Farranree, The Glen, Mayfield, Mahon and Togher, offering communities a chance to honour this ancient tradition without the environmental damage and safety risks associated with bonfires.

The Non-Fire Night events recognise that whilst St John’s Night has deep cultural roots near the summer solstice, when ancient cultures lit fires to honour the sun, modern understanding shows these practices can severely harm local environments. Burning bonfires pollutes the air and scorches green spaces so badly it can take years for grass to regrow, whilst also posing risks to people’s safety.

Instead, residents can enjoy play workshops, arts and crafts, sports and games, plus music and dance across the six locations. The family-friendly events are organised in close partnership between Cork City Council’s Community team and local committees, creating opportunities for neighbours and newcomers to connect while celebrating this unique part of Cork’s heritage calendar.

The Lord Mayor will visit each site, as is customary, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy at these community gatherings.
