Cork Named Among National Geographic’s Top 25 Global Destinations for 2025

Cork has earned a prestigious spot on National Geographic’s list of top 25 destinations to visit in 2025, gaining recognition for its vibrant culture, ongoing urban development and rich heritage.

The renowned travel publication specifically highlighted Cork’s “emerging urban renaissance” as a key factor in its selection. This recognition comes as the city undertakes significant projects under the Cork City Development Plan, which forms part of the €128 billion Project Ireland initiative.

These ambitious developments include the redevelopment of the port and docklands, extensive refurbishment of the Crawford Art Gallery, and enhancements to the Cork Event Centre, which will host new concerts, festivals and exhibitions.

Cork is also set to introduce several new attractions to boost tourism. Plans include the construction of a 50-metre heated outdoor swimming pool, the reopening of the 600-year-old Barryscourt Castle, and the transformation of Roches Point and Ballycotton Lighthouses into tourist accommodations.

Additionally, the city aims to create coastal pathways, increase ferry routes to Spike Island, and enhance cultural and food experiences to position Cork as Ireland’s food capital.

The cultural scene in Cork is another significant draw for visitors. In September 2025, the city will host the biennial “Sounds from a Safe Harbour” festival, co-founded by Oscar-winning actor and Cork native Cillian Murphy. This four-day event will feature music, dance, literature, theatre and conversation, with a focus on new works and collaborations.

With this combination of historical charm and modern vibrancy, Cork offers visitors a unique blend of experiences, making it a must-visit destination in 2025.
