Cork Set for Scorching Week as Temperatures Soar to Possibly 27°C

  • High pressure system brings warmest spell of the year so far, with sunshine and heat building through to Friday before Atlantic air brings weekend relief

Cork’s in for a treat this week as forecasters predict the warmest weather of the year so far, with temperatures potentially reaching 27°C by Friday in what promises to be a classic summer heatwave.

The surge in temperature comes as a high pressure system establishes itself across Ireland, bringing with it long periods of warm sunshine and settled conditions that will see the mercury climb steadily from Wednesday onwards.

Cathal Nolan, Ireland’s Weather Channel:

“Through tomorrow high pressure establishes itself across the country with long periods of warm sunshine developing. Temperatures will begin to rise tomorrow reaching up to 23 or 24 degrees Celsius across the southern half of the country.”

Wednesday will see temperatures reach 24-25°C across Cork, with conditions remaining dry and sunny. However, it’s Thursday and Friday that will deliver the real heat, with some areas potentially hitting 28°C in prolonged sunshine, particularly northwest of high ground.

Nick Critch, Weather Alerts Ireland:

“Warmer air will push in making those temperatures rise! As high as 27°C by Friday! A good deal of sun is forecast between now and Friday also!”

The forecast shows a clear progression through the week: Wednesday bringing 24-25°C, Thursday reaching 26°C, and Friday potentially hitting the peak of 27°C. Met Éireann confirms the pattern, predicting highest temperatures of 18-22°C tomorrow, building to 19-24°C on Thursday and 20-25°C on Friday.

However, those planning weekend activities should note that cooler Atlantic air is expected to push in, with temperatures dropping back significantly. Sunday could see a notable change, with some models suggesting temperatures falling to around 20°C.

Cathal Nolan warns of potential weekend complications:

“The weekend remains very warm but increasingly humid with some models indicating a risk of thunderstorms developing through Saturday as a trough emerges from the Bay of Biscay, something we’ll be keeping a close eye on.”

Met Éireann has issued a high to very high UV index warning, reminding residents to take sun protection seriously during the peak heat days. The national forecaster also notes that while the week will be predominantly dry, some showers may develop, particularly along Atlantic coastal counties.

For Cork, this represents a perfect opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities midweek, though those sensitive to heat should plan accordingly. The timing couldn’t be better for local businesses and outdoor events, with the settled weather pattern expected to hold until the weekend.
