Uisce Éireann is calling on communities across East Cork to help protect water supplies after a surge in demand coupled with reduced river and groundwater levels has put pressure on the network serving coastal and inland areas.
The utility company is ramping up leak detection and pipe repairs across affected areas, which include Castlemartyr, Mogeely, Cloyne, Knockadoon, Ladysbridge, Garryvoe and Shanagarry, as residents and businesses prepare for the busy summer months ahead.
Niall O’Riordan, Operations Manager in Cork with Uisce Éireann, said:
“Reduced river and groundwater levels coupled with high demand are impacting supplies in East Cork. In response to this we have been ramping up our leakage detection, pipe repairs, and other network management activities to help offset this demand. We will continue to monitor the situation and take measures to manage supplies as we go into the summer months. However, we welcome any support the public can provide by doing what they can to reduce their use.”
The company emphasises that small changes can make a significant difference. Simple steps like taking shorter showers, placing a basin in the sink whilst washing dishes, and fixing leaking taps can all help safeguard supplies during what’s expected to be a busy period for the popular East Cork coastal areas.
For those wanting to track their conservation efforts, Uisce Éireann has developed an online calculator at water.ie/calculator to help residents see exactly how much water they’re saving.
Property owners are also being encouraged to check for underground leaks, particularly persistent moisture in lawns or driveways during dry weather. The company’s first fix free scheme provides complimentary leak repairs on private property where issues are identified.
Key water-saving measures include:
Switching from baths to showers can save over 30 litres per wash, whilst cutting shower time by just one minute saves up to 7 litres daily. Turning off taps whilst brushing teeth prevents up to 6 litres per minute going down the drain, and ensuring dishwashers and washing machines are fully loaded maximises efficiency.
For businesses, Uisce Éireann recommends conducting water audits, appointing conservation champions, and investing in water-efficient devices.
The company’s 24-hour helpdesk is available at 1800 278 278 for reporting leaks or seeking advice. More conservation tips and information about the free leak repair scheme are available at water.ie.
