Festive Magic Descends on Fermoy: Christmas Lights Illuminate the Town in a Spectacular Display


Fermoy has been a hive of activity over the past few weeks as the town’s Christmas lights are being hung, shop windows are decorated, and businesses and the local community are working together to ensure the town is lit up and in full festive form. 

On Saturday 25th November at 6pm, Santa will arrive to support the captain of Team Irelands gold winning soccer team at the Berlin Special Olympics, Stephen O’Leary, turn on the town center Christmas Lights. Patrick street will be full of fun with lots of music and the now legendary magical atmosphere this community event has become known for. At 7pm a fireworks display, hosted by Fermoy GAA, will light up the sky over the town making sure Santa can find his way back to the North Pole.

The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Frank O’Flynn highlighted how:

“This really is a wonderful time of the year. Cork County Council is proud to be able to support the voluntary Christmas Lights Committee who do such a great job in making Fermoy town look even more beautiful at Christmas. We are also working with the amazing Avondhu Blackwater Partnership and bringing a festive Christmas Market to the town. It really is going to be extra special this year so please do shop local and support our incredible businesses. Make Fermoy part of your Christmas plans.”  

Fermoy’s Christmas Market will be in Mill Island carpark and will open on Saturday 25th at 12pm and run at weekends until 3rd December. The crafts and gifts available at the market will add to the wide range of Christmas shopping options available in Fermoy this Christmas. 

Nearly 150 local business have made financial contributions to the towns Christmas Lights fundraising appeal. Main local sponsors, Synergy Credit Union, have generously supported this event for over 10 years. CEO, Martina Cotter outlines that:

On Friday 24th November there will be and additional two events to turn on the town’s lights on the north and south sides of town. 6pm at the Cross and 7pm on Barrack hill. Everyone is looking forward to the weekend, to spending time with family and friends enjoying the magic that is the start of the Christmas season.
