The HSE South has announced that all acute hospitals in the region are currently experiencing a significant surge in patients with respiratory viral illnesses, including Influenza, RSV, and COVID-19.
Hospitals affected include University Hospital Kerry, Cork University Hospital, Mercy University Hospital, South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital, Bantry General Hospital, and Mallow General Hospital.
To curb the spread of these illnesses within healthcare settings, hospitals in Cork and Kerry are enforcing strict visiting restrictions with immediate effect. Visiting hours are now limited to 6pm–8pm daily, with only two visitors permitted per patient during this time. All visitors will also be required to wear face masks while on hospital premises.
These measures will remain in place until clinical conditions allow for their removal. Exceptions may be granted in specific circumstances, but visitors must contact ward staff in advance to make arrangements.

Dr. Andy Phillips, HSE South West Regional Executive Officer, has urged individuals with non-emergency health issues to explore alternative care pathways. He advised:
“Patients with non-emergency conditions should seek assistance from other parts of the health service. Pharmacies, for instance, can provide guidance on minor illnesses, and out-of-hours GP services like SouthDoc are available for urgent consultations.”
For pharmacy advice, visit HSE Pharmacy Services. The SouthDoc service can be reached on 0818 355 999 for urgent GP care outside regular hours.
