Humid Weekend Ahead as Subtropical Air Brings Mixed Conditions to Cork

Cork should prepare for a warm but unsettled weekend as humid subtropical air moves across Munster, bringing a mix of cloud, drizzle and occasional sunny spells with temperatures reaching the low twenties.

Met Éireann forecasts today will see scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle this morning before becoming largely dry this afternoon and evening, though a few patches of light rain may persist. The national forecaster expects it will “feel warm in any bright or sunny breaks” with highest temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees in fresh and gusty southwest winds.

Tonight will remain humid and breezy with scattered patches of rain and drizzle, and what Met Éireann describes as “a close and humid night” with lowest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees.

Saturday’s outlook continues the mixed theme, with mostly cloudy conditions and occasional rain or drizzle, though a few bright or sunny spells may develop. Maximum temperatures will range from 19 to 23 degrees in moderate southwest winds.

Cathal Nolan from Ireland’s Weather Channel provides additional context for the weekend ahead, explaining the broader weather pattern affecting the region.

Cathal Nolan, Ireland’s Weather Channel:

“We’re in for very humid conditions this weekend with a warm southwesterly airflow feeding up some very warm air from a subtropical source, but in doing so it will also feed in plenty cloud and even some spells of persistent rain or drizzle for the west and northwest in particular.”

For Cork and the wider Munster region, this positioning suggests the county may experience some of the more persistent rain and drizzle mentioned, particularly in western areas. However, Nolan notes the best chances for sunshine will be across the east and southeast of the country.

Cathal Nolan, Ireland’s Weather Channel: “The best chance of any sunshine this weekend will be across the east and southeast of the country and where we see clear breaks here temperatures will rise quickly into the low or even mid 20’s to the east of high ground.”

This could benefit eastern parts of Cork, particularly areas around Youghal and East Cork, which may see clearer conditions and warmer temperatures.

Looking ahead to next week, both forecasters indicate changeable conditions will continue. Nolan expects overcast and wet conditions on Monday as a weather front clears eastwards, followed by drier and brighter midweek conditions, though temperatures will turn fresher.

The humidity brings additional considerations for residents. Met Éireann reports moderate pollen levels for Friday and Saturday, while the UV index will be moderate on Friday but very high in any sunshine, rising to moderate to high on Saturday.

For those planning outdoor activities this weekend in Cork, the message is clear: pack layers and waterproofs, but don’t rule out some pleasant spells, particularly if you’re in eastern parts of the county.
