Major Junction Works Begin Monday at South Mall as City Prepares for Parnell Plaza

Cork City Council will commence significant alterations at the busy South Mall and Parnell Place junction from Monday 14 July, marking a key step towards improved pedestrian safety and the much-anticipated Parnell Plaza development.

The works, designed to calm traffic and enhance safety at one of Cork’s most heavily used intersections, will require night-time lane closures over the coming weeks. The project represents part of the broader city centre enhancement programme that includes the creation of new public space at Parnell Plaza.

First Phase Disruption

From Monday 14 July to Friday 25 July, the right-turning southbound lane from South Mall onto Parnell Bridge will be closed between 8.00 p.m. and 6.00 a.m., Monday to Friday nights only. Day-time traffic will continue as normal during this period.

Southbound traffic will be diverted via Parnell Place, Lower Oliver Plunkett Street, Clontarf Street, Terence MacSweeney Quay, and onto Anglesea Street.

Second Phase Restrictions

The following phase, running from Monday 28 July to Friday 8 August, will see the left-turning northbound lane from South Mall onto Parnell Place closed during the same night-time hours of 8.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m.

During this period, northbound traffic from South Mall will be redirected via Anglesea Street, Old Station Road, Eglinton Street, Terence MacSweeney Quay, and onto Parnell Place.

Permanent Changes Ahead

Once completed, the junction will feature a reconfigured layout. The current two left-hand lanes turning northbound from South Mall to Parnell Place will be consolidated into a single northbound lane. The existing traffic island and southbound lane will be repositioned slightly north of their current location.

Cork City Council has confirmed that pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained throughout the works period. Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes and follow diversional signage during the affected hours.
