Mental health charity Turn2Me has launched free online support groups for students preparing for the Leaving Cert examinations, which begin in early June. The initiative aims to help thousands of students across Ireland manage exam-related stress and anxiety during this challenging period.
The charity will host two dedicated support sessions on 22nd May and 29th May at 6pm, accessible through their website Turn2Me.ie. These groups provide students with a safe environment to discuss their concerns and receive guidance from qualified mental health professionals.
Alongside these support groups, Turn2Me has shared six practical strategies to help students maintain wellbeing while preparing for their exams:
1. Make a Realistic Study Plan
Students are advised to break revision into manageable sections with achievable daily goals. The charity recommends maintaining a balanced schedule that incorporates both study and rest periods, rather than resorting to last-minute cramming.
2. Take Regular Breaks
To optimise information retention, Turn2Me suggests following a pattern of 45 minutes of concentrated study followed by a 5-minute break. This approach helps maintain focus and mental freshness throughout revision sessions.
3. Prioritise Sleep
The charity emphasises that adequate sleep is crucial for memory consolidation and cognitive function. Students should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep nightly and avoid screen exposure before bedtime.
4. Eat Well and Stay Hydrated
Proper nutrition plays a vital role in brain function. Turn2Me recommends nutritious foods and regular hydration, while limiting caffeine and sugary snacks that can cause energy fluctuations. They specifically advise avoiding coffee after 2pm to improve sleep quality.
5. Practice Relaxation Techniques
Simple strategies such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness practices and short walks can significantly reduce anxiety levels, according to the charity.
6. Talk to Someone
Turn2Me stresses the importance of not isolating oneself during stressful periods. Students are encouraged to share their feelings with trusted individuals or join the charity’s support groups to connect with peers facing similar challenges.
Fiona O’Malley, CEO of Turn2Me, said:
“These support groups are a great opportunity for students to share their worries in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. Turn2Me help students realise they’re not alone and that stress is something they can manage with the right support.”
The online support groups are free to attend and open to all Leaving Cert students experiencing exam-related stress. Interested students can register at www.Turn2Me.ie.
