Multiple Road Works and Closures Across Cork from Monday

Cork motorists face a busy week of road disruption as multiple works projects begin on Monday, 21 July, combined with several complete road closures and ongoing city centre restrictions.

City Road Works Begin Monday

Cork City Council has scheduled road works to begin on Monday across eleven locations, causing traffic disruption but keeping roads open. The works include Wandesford Street (continuing until 25 August), Douglas Road (two separate locations), Pearse Road, St Annes Road, Melbourn Road, Uam Var Avenue, Clarkes Road, Grange Road, College Road, and Mahon Point Shopping Centre.

These road works will create delays and lane restrictions throughout the week, with most continuing until Friday, 25 July.

County Road Closures

Cork County Council has implemented several complete road closures starting Monday. Local roads affected include the L5003 at Lyreneag in Rockchapel, L1203 at Annabella in Mallow, L2202 at Farran, L1423 at Billeragh East near Kilworth, and L5397 at Lavally Lower in Mallow.

The most significant county closure affects the R593 Mill Road in Skibbereen, which closes Monday for culvert renewal works and won’t reopen until 21 November – a four-month closure that will impact West Cork traffic.

M8 Overnight Closure

The M8 southbound between Junction 13 and Junction 14 faces a complete overnight closure from 7:00 p.m. Monday to 6:00 a.m. Tuesday for overhead gantry installation. This follows a similar closure that occurred last Monday night.

Ongoing City Centre Disruption

Morrison’s Island Public Realm works continue to affect the city centre. The right-turning southbound lane from South Mall onto Parnell Bridge remains closed nightly from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. until Friday, 25 July, with diversions via Parnell Place and Lower Oliver Plunkett Street.

Union Quay restrictions continue until 31 August, preventing right turns from Parnell Bridge for through traffic. Father Mathew Quay remains closed between Parliament Bridge and Holy Trinity Church.

One Road Reopens

The L7640 at Poulaniska in Carrigtwohill, which has been closed for resurfacing works since 7 July, is scheduled to reopen on Monday.

Travel Advice

The combination of new city road works, county road closures, and ongoing restrictions means Monday morning commuters should expect delays across multiple routes. Cork City Council and Cork County Council advise allowing extra time for all journeys and following diversion signage.

The R618 in Inniscarra will close from Tuesday, 22 July, adding further pressure to routes between Cork city and Macroom.
