Motorists travelling through Glanmire are advised that the R639 remains closed this week, with traffic management measures in place at the busy Eastcliff/L3010 junction near Lidl and the Sars GAA pitches in Riverstown.
Cork City Council has implemented a clearly signposted diversion route to manage traffic flow during the roadworks. Drivers are asked to follow the alternative route via Church Hill, Castlejane and Barnavara Hill where possible.
The timing of the works has been deliberately scheduled to coincide with reduced school traffic, allowing contractors to make significant progress on the project while minimising disruption to the community.
Local residents, businesses and shoppers in the Riverstown area have been thanked by the council for their patience and cooperation during the temporary closure. The traffic management system is designed to maintain access to local amenities while work continues.
Motorists planning journeys through the area should allow extra time for their travels and follow the official diversion signage. The closure affects a key route through Glanmire, making adherence to the alternative routes essential for smooth traffic flow.
For those unfamiliar with the area, the diversion takes traffic away from the closed section near the popular Lidl store and Sars grounds, routing vehicles through the residential areas of Church Hill, Castlejane and Barnavara Hill before rejoining the main route.
Cork City Council, in their statement, said:
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all residents, shoppers and businesses in the area for their patience and co-operation as contractors try to progress as much of the works as possible while there is a reduction in school traffic.”
The council has not specified an exact completion date but confirmed works will continue throughout this week.
