Cork County Council is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated return of the Special Music Event Scheme, a community-led initiative aimed at promoting tourism and celebrating the rich music culture of West Cork. Now in its seventh year, the scheme continues to provide invaluable grant funding to voluntary music groups, allowing them to organise and perform up to four music events in their local towns within the West Cork and Bandon/Kinsale Municipal District areas.
The Special Music Event Scheme has been a cornerstone in showcasing the remarkable talent of local musicians. This year’s programme promises to uphold this tradition, featuring a diverse array of performances by gifted groups from across West Cork. Audiences can look forward to an eclectic mix of brass and reed music, local silver and brass band performances, as well as traditional music, song, and dance by local Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann music groups.
Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Frank O’Flynn, expressed his enthusiasm for the programme, stating, “The programme consists of over 20 dates running right through the summer until the end of August in Bandon, Kinsale, Skibbereen, Clonakilty, and Dunmanway. Admission to all events is free, making it a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the rich musical heritage of the region. The scheme has been a real success and its return for the seventh year is a testament to its popularity. This success lies in the collaborative nature of the initiative, with Cork County Council, businesses, and the community working in partnership to support local musicians while further enhancing West Cork’s tourism offering.”
The Special Music Event Scheme not only highlights the region’s musical heritage but also plays a significant role in boosting local tourism. The free admission to all events ensures that everyone has the chance to experience the vibrant musical landscape of West Cork.
