An invigorating festival of scientific inquiry and innovation is set to unravel across Ireland, promising a week-long celebration for curious minds. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD, along with Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), launched Science Week 2023 today, unveiling a €650,000 funding package aimed at stimulating public interest and engagement in science.

A Week of Discovery and Dialogue

Scheduled for 12th-19th November, this year’s theme, ‘Human?’, encourages people to ponder on the essence of being human in today’s complex world. It challenges us to consider how the choices we make today will mould the future of society and the planet.

“Science Week is always an excellent platform for engaging the public through interactive and captivating events,” said Minister Harris. “As humans, our pursuits in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) will significantly influence the future. Through research and innovation, we are equipping ourselves to tackle the various challenges our society faces.”

Diverse Range of Events

With an array of 15 festivals being held nationwide, the week promises something for everyone. Events range from Space Fest 2023 for the space enthusiasts, to the quirky and exciting Circus Science by the Sea Festival on Achill Island. Other highlights include Kerry Science Festival’s ‘Being Human in Today’s World’ and the Dublin-based STEM extravaganza, “C’mere Till I Tell Ye”.

Professor Philip Nolan, Director General of SFI, added, “Science impacts our lives in myriad ways; from technological advances to healthcare, environmental conservation and even entertainment. This week will allow us to explore these dimensions while reflecting on the human condition and our collective future.”

Volunteer-driven Success

Professor Nolan also took the opportunity to applaud the community of volunteers who have been instrumental in bringing Science Week to life year after year. Their dedication in passionately promoting science plays a pivotal role in the event’s growing success.

Responsible Innovation

The event comes at a crucial time when the world is grappling with an array of issues such as the climate emergency, ethical considerations in AI, and social challenges.

“Science Week 2023 gives us a chance to think about both the wonders and the responsibilities that come with advances in STEM,” Minister Harris noted.
