Cork faces another sticky night as Met Éireann’s Status Yellow high temperature warning remains in effect until 06:00 on Sunday morning, with temperatures expected to stay above 15°C throughout the night.
After a day that saw temperatures exceed 27°C across the county, many are now preparing for what could be an uncomfortable night’s sleep. The warm conditions make it difficult for bodies to cool down naturally during sleep, potentially leading to restlessness and poor sleep quality.
With just hours until bedtime for many, here are immediate steps you can take to improve your chances of a decent night’s rest:
- Open windows on opposite sides of your home now to create a cross-breeze and let cooler evening air circulate. If you haven’t already, close bedroom curtains to keep any residual heat from radiating from windows.
- Strip your bed down to the lightest layers possible. A single cotton sheet may be all you need tonight. Place a damp flannel in the freezer now; you can use it on pulse points like wrists and neck if you wake up overheated.
- Position fans strategically in bedrooms. For an extra cooling effect, place a frozen water bottle or bowl of ice in front of the fan. The air blowing over the ice creates a makeshift air conditioner.
- Consider a lukewarm shower before bed, not cold, as this helps your body temperature regulate more effectively. Keep a spray bottle of water on your bedside table for quick cooling relief during the night.
